Parco dell'Orecchiella

With the arrival of summer season I start again traveling towards Versilia in the weekend and as this one was a *long* weekend, the Arkansas Chuggabug bravely crossed Apuane Alps first heading to Garfagnana and finally entering the Orecchiella Park, right on the border between Tuscany and Emilia.
Target of a previous visit made last New Year's Eve, the Orecchiella Park is a place that deserves to be visited in each season, at least from what the books show. This time it would be a springtime trip in order to do some walking in the mountains and some Vespa ride between villages and woods, taking photos and tasting good food. Our base camp the Rifugio Isera, just below the Pania di Corfino, the central mountain of the park. The refuge is very well kept and the managers are nice people; to get there from the main road there's a short unpaved road that anticipates the road that we'd ride a couple of days after.
Ridden the Arni road and passed by the Tagliate quarry, the Cipollaio tunnel and the hydroelectric power plant of Torrite, everything seemed already exciting, the air fresh, the weather beautiful and the Vespa loaded with a little and well distributed baggage; the trip to Sardinia and the advices of biker friends (first of all Carlone) taught us to optimize weight, space and hardware, so: sleeping bags rolled, tied and wrapped with my waterproof McKinley cover, on the rear rack; a small backpack tied to the saddle, held between my legs and finally a second small backpack in a waterproof bag tied on the front rack. Under the saddle, besides a few common items, I brought a small emergency tank for gasoline, since upon the mountains gas stations are not so many. It would be better to use a certified tank for fuel transportation, but after a quick look at the main vespa forums I finished assuming that an old one-litre empty oil tank would have been enough for a three days trip, leaving us a good tolerance in terms of kilometres and leaks. We actually did not use it because luckily we met gas stations just when needed; however it has become a standard accessory for all those risky commutes in which the road to ride is just more than a full tank allows.
The first day was equally divided between the morning commute and the afternoon Vespa ride in the lower area of the park, where we met tiny interesting villages and the Verrucole Castle, a rather scenic medieval fortress.
Instead we spent the second day walking along the path that runs around the Pania of Corfino and then climbs up to the top to follow back down to the refuge, a quiet walk that took us around five/six hours to complete.
The third day, that of our return, we decided to ride an unpaved road that crosses the park between beeches up to Sella di Campaiana at an altitude of 1536 meters a.s.l. and then reconnects to the road which from the village of Sassorosso heads towards Passo delle Radici. It's a wonderful road, especially in this season when shades of green gradually begin to spring by branches and ground; the beech wood is high and the sun filters in the right amount; it's an area unexpectedly rich in water so that, as a tradition, we are forced to cross a ford. Another funny test for the Arkansas Chuggabug!
Back on the asphalt we ride up to Castiglione, then still in Castelnuovo for an ice cream and to buy meats and sweets. Finally, on the way back home we decide to turn to Arni and climb up the Passo del Vestito, then gently descending down to Massa, on a beautiful and scenic road, which climbs through wild mountains and then crosses them through a tunnel and down in the midst of white marble quarries.
The return matches with sunset; we have ridden again for kilometers , seen beautiful places, lived a weekend as we would like to live forever: on two wheels, with a light luggage and a bit of adventure.

  5. thanks Ronman. Touring on a Vespa is a classical thing to a Vespa rider here in Italy...
A famous rider named Giorgio Bettinelli toured the whole world, 254.000 kms, and now is touring China on a GTS 250!
