Easy as murder

"Who wanted to change the world,
What's as easy as murder?"

[Counting Crows - "Cowboys"]

a) nessuno puo' azzardarsi a sorpassare nessun'altro in alcun modo.

I've been workin' in a nearby town for three years, now, and I've never liked the traffic policies that the local administration runs on its territory; nevertheless, I'm a host here and I have to respect local rules, at least as long as they're reasonable. Saying "reasonable" I don't mean having the right to break these rules if they don't fit my needs, it just means behaving correctly as long as I don't have to break more important rules such as staying alive and avoiding to kill others. I believe this is what every brain-driven being should at least agree. Well it's hard, folks, really hard to respect the rules when you find yourself in front of horrible urban monsters like the brand new bycicle lane built in San Vincenzo, 20 km from my hometown, a town with rollercoaster-planned streets and the range of stupid obstacles you wouldn't neither find on a military training course. This is exactly what riders should be scared of: an incredible mix of risks on an overcrowded road. But what did they do? They narrowed the southbound road which leaves the town to make room for the bycicle lane, leaving just the space to let two cars cross in the car lanes; this leads to all these wonderful consequences:

a) no one can overtake anyone anyway. If you find someone driving at the mad speed of 15 km/h you are forced to ride at that speed for miles.
b) no pro-cyclist will ever ride along the bycicle lane, as they can't deal with common cyclists and their casual shifts, so they all ride along the car lane, slowing the traffic down.
c) the bycicle lane starts suddenly and suddenly ends, so that the junctions become highly dangerous places where car traffic have to mix with them and their slow motions.
d) everyone who turns towards the seaside has to cross the bycicle lane thus crossing the bycicle flow; there are two choices: frighten the bycicles forcing them to brake or occupy the car lane and generate a queue to wait for they to pass along.

This could have been pure genius by itself, but they wanted to do more: they physically separated the two lanes by placing yellow concrete blocks on the line, spacing them by short gaps and generating a dashed concrete line which has many many other crazy characteristics I will list here:

e) If an ambulance has to hurry to the hospital which is in Piombino, and it finds a queue, there isn't any physical way to trespass the lane even at low speed. Hope to be healty, you might just die waiting for tourists to reach the beach and contemplate the landscape. After all they can't park aside and let the ambulance pass: there isn't any place to stop.
f) If, despite of the rules, someone facing you attempts an overtake and he's too near, you can't shift aside to dodge him. And if your instinct tells you to dodge him, you'll find yourself hitting the concrete blocks, maybe bouncing or maybe ripping your tires because while the sides of this blocks are rounded, the ends are razor-sharp as they were built to be put in contact and form a continuous line, not a dashed one. This might be the reason why in the first week of existence of this infamous lane I witnessed at least four accidents: a burned car, a destroyed scooter (a 50cc, so it was probably a kid) and two people who, hitting those edges, literally ripped apart their right tires. This is great: granting the cyclists' safety by destroying every car and every bike. Might this configure as a nazis' apology?
g) of course if you ripped both your right tires you should at least drive out of the lane not to become an obstacle. Where? What if your engine breaks? What if you accidentally run out of fuel?
h) evidently, bumping against these blocks wasn't to be considered a lesser concern to drivers; after the first bumps, in fact, they noticed that trucks and heavier vehicles could actually move them by hitting them, so these blocks have been firmly held in place by long steel screws. Now you can't add disorder to this universe's enthropy. Our planet is safe.
All this said it seems that they prefer to spend money to build these facilities even before fixing what's already there. Who cares if a rider breaks his bike hitting all those holes and cracks? I won't talk about all those stupid one-way streets, those sword-like poles, those mad roundabouts, those bumps and holes and all the dumbness of going on to lay down more yellow concrete blocks even if the evidence of crashes and queues shouts out "stop this damn mess!".
It would be useless, it's a town of deafs.
Listen to my advice: if you haven't any particular reason to enter the town, especially in summer, please don't do it and just drive on along the speedway, whatever direction you're facing. It will be safer, to you and to everyone who lives daily in this hell.

Ronman: LOL! as I just wrote to mizzi, this evening I found a piece of wood with a nail in the middle of the lane... I really don't know where to look at!

  4. Guess it is the same everywhere. The people making the traffic decisions evidently don't take the roads.
