First of all: I fell.
Last week, along an urban strech of Province Road 23 with no streetlamps, the wheels met a bad crack in the asphalt just as I left from a stop sign, the Vespa slipped on the right side lying orthogonal to the road among the cars zipping through careless of the 50 km/h speed limit.
Flashback: something was wrong since two weeks ago. The engine was drowning at high RPM up to turn off at wide open throttle, the Vespa had an overall power loss with a maximum speed of 50 mph jusl like ast year, when a carburettor membrane got cut; that's why in a couple of days I was due to bring it to Fausto's garage for a check.
Back to the tumble; luckily I wasn't run over. Not a single car driver stopped to help me or just ask if everything was ok. I actually wasn't hurt, as I wear protections. The Vespa, instead, suffered a serious scratch on the right side, on the front light, the windshield and the foot rest; moreover the right rear view mirror snapped off completely. After all it was time to bring the Chuggabug to the body shop.

But what's almost incredible is that after the tumble all the engine faults have instantly vanished. More, after a week, I notice that the engine runs way more smoothly and yesterday I reached the incredible speed of 65 mph.
I don't know what it could be, with Fausto I hypotized everything but nothing seems too plausible. Mysteries of mechanics. It's a pity for the Vespa, though, as I'll be forced to have its body fixed before the bad season comes.
Not all tumbles are that bad; not only, at least.

  1. Sorry to hear you went down. But you weren't hurt (especially after traffic seemed to zip around you regardless), and that is the most important bit. Scratches add to the character of a scoot (mine has some too...), and obviously the fall miraculously fixed your engine problem.
I hope you get back into the saddle soon. Take care, especially in the colder, darker season.

  2. Thank you Sonja, I actually was back on the saddle the very next day ;-) Still have to bring it to the body shop.
What's fantastic is that after a week and a letter to the city council, they seem to start fixing the crack and the guard rail!
I maybe won't get a single coin back from them, but at least the road will be a bit more secure!

    Ride safe, a hug
    :-)
